CONSUMED/CONSUMER
Consumed/Consumer is an audiovisual installation, a sixteen-minute advertising blob that juxtaposes television commercials from all over the globe.
The work takes the form of a Debordian détournement that plunders from the imaginary of the dominant culture to craft a critical counter-message, aimed at highlighting the dual identity of the postmodern consumer: subject of consumption and at the same time object to be consumed.
The soundtrack has been assembled by using only samples and music present in the original advertisements thus playing a decisive role in making the experience alienating and disturbing. The dark tones composed of voices and laments create an opposition to the joyful sentiments and sweetened aesthetics of the advertising galaxy. The resulting scenario is surreal, dreamlike and disorienting.
The artistic direction together with the editing pace and the sound work to make this artwork’s experience intelligible and at the same time full of content, bewitching and at the same time distressing.
Finally, the work has been thought to be exhibited either as a movie screening or as a looped installation (technical sheet will be presented upon request).
